  3. spectrum (Fraunhofer lines), which reveal the
  4. chemical composition of the Sun's atmosphere,
  5. were accurately mapped by him. Born in
  6. Bavaria, he was apprenticed to a glass
  7. cutter, and in 1807 founded an optical
  8. institute.
